Did you know about AFP’s 7 Diverse Communities?

April 5, 2012

Just got back from the AFP International Conference in Vancouver where I learned lots of great information about fundraising, which I’ll put into some future posts, but right now I want to share some updates on what our international organization is doing in the realm of diversity.

First of all, the organization has changed its definition of diversity to:

Diversity is the seeking and achieving of a broad representation of experiences, perspectives, opinions and cultures. Inclusiveness is an essential source of vitality and strength for the effective pursuit of an organization’s mission.

A key part of achieving this broad representation is to allow AFP members to self-identify affinity groupings that are meaningful to us.  So far, seven diverse communities have been created:

  • African-American
  • Asian
  • Faith-based
  • GLBT
  • Hispanic
  • Jewish
  • Rural

Do you fit in any of these categories?  Do you think a new grouping needs to be created?  To find out more or to join in the conversation, go to www.afpnet.org/diversity
